Diabetes is basically a disease of the metabolic system. All the functions of the body are dependent upon Glucose for its metabolism. In diabetes were sugar levels are raised, all functions of the organs of the body are disrupted. Diabetes can lead to diseases in the Eyes, Heart, Digestive tract, Feet, Arteries, Nerves and so on.The main reason for raised glucose levels in Diabetes Mellitus is the reduced production of insulin which is an important hormone secreted by the Beta cells of Pancreas or decreased sensitivity of the body to insulin.

Ask a doctor Diabetes - Debunking the myth

Myths:

Myth 1 : Only Obese people get Diabetes.

Fact :  Anybody can get Diabetes. Obesity is only a risk factor for Type 2 Diabetes (Insulin Resistant). Type 1 Diabetics are usually lean.

Myth 2 :  Testing Blood Glucose regularly is not important.

Fact : Blood Glucose monitoring is extremely essential for the proper maintenance of glucose levels.

Myth 3: Exercising will lead to hypoglycemia and worsen Diabetes.

Fact: Proper exercise can lead to better control over Diabetes and can even decrease the insulin resistance, thus decreasing the severity of the disease. Always consult a doctor before starting exercise to know what types of exercise is useful in Diabetes and for what duration.

Myth 4: Only people with Family History of Diabetes can develop it.

Fact: Though Family History of Diabetes is an important risk factor for getting Diabetes, a lot of people diagnosed with diabetes do not have a family history of it.

Myth 5: If I am taking Antidiabetic medication I can eat anything.

Fact: Antidiabetic medications can never control the blood glucose levels continuously if we eat high carb diets several times a day. Research has shown that short peaks in the blood glucose levels are sufficient enough to damage the eyes and kidneys of a diabetic even if the fasting blood glucose appears normal.
