Hypertension is one common disease that remains undiagnosed in a majority of patients in the community. Epidemiologists say that hypertension follows what is called the “Ice Berg Phenomenon”.
In an iceberg only its tip which is above the water is visible. This is actually a very small size compared to the major part of it which remains hidden inside the water. Similarly the cases of hypertension that have been diagnosed is just the tip of the iceberg and the major part of the cases in the community remain hidden and undiagnosed. Hypertension is a disease with very serious complications. It can cause Hypertrophy of the heart and eventually result in Heart Failure.
It is also the commonest cause of Myocardial Infarction or Heart attack as is commonly called, which itself is the single most cause of death in the majority of patients in the developed countries of the world including United States. Even in the Patients that are diagnosed the treatment is rarely proper for that particular person. Hence it is always advisable to get your Blood pressure checked regularly especially if you are in your late Thirties. For more information fell free to Ask A Doctor. |
